At the risk of running off-topic:
I think there’s a bit more to glean from the ruling than that, thankfully. It seems particularly noteworthy that the ICJ rejected Israel’s assertion that they are acting in self-defense - which has been their (and their allies) justification for their actions in Gaza the past months.
I found Craig Murray’s reporting on this to be the most comprehensive and revelatory. His latest: Has International Law Survived, or Has the Western Political Class Killed It? - Craig Murray
Sorry, I’m considering opening a new topic for this discussion because it’s super important. For now i’ll keep that one here tho.
idk about palestinians but I know that lots of anarchist ukrainians are very thankful to kurds for what they taught them and because they were among the first communities who stood by their side without even considering geopolitics manoeuvers and narratives. Because they know they sometimes don’t have the priviledge to choose their supporters when facing such a deadly threat.
Therefore it’s really not about “comparing” but to “combat” => “fighting side by side”, considering means of resistance above all. Every anti-authoritarian movement confronted to war have used, studied, improved, shared methods between them to aim for peace and freedom. As we do with free software, but as they do to try and defend their actual lives. Free know-hows that OFFDEM is hopefully gathering.
After reading more thoroughly the ICJ’s intermediary judgement order, I found that indeed, the “rule of law” is maintained, as Craig Murray suggests.
There are indeed some strong points in favour of ‘success’, especially points 72 to 74 (emphasis mine):
- In these circumstances, the Court considers that the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is at serious risk of deteriorating further before the Court renders its final judgment.
- The Court recalls Israel’s statement that it has taken certain steps to address and alleviate the conditions faced by the population in the Gaza Strip. The Court further notes that the Attorney General of Israel recently stated that a call for intentional harm to civilians may amount to a criminal offence, including that of incitement, and that several such cases are being examined by Israeli law enforcement authorities. While steps such as these are to be encouraged, they are insufficient to remove the risk that irreparable prejudice will be caused before the Court issues its final decision in the case.
- In light of the considerations set out above, the Court considers that there is urgency, in the sense that there is a real and imminent risk that irreparable prejudice will be caused to the rights found by the Court to be plausible, before it gives its final decision.
In all three points, the ICJ points to the fact the situation is dire and it did not render its final judgement. The fact most decisions were voted by all but one or two judges (including one from Israel) shows that the final judgement is unlikely to be much different, especially if Israel continue with their course of action – which they seem to do, with Netanyahu intensifying his position and waving the Iranian scapegoat, and the US puppeteers moving their purses away from UNRWA in retaliation of ICJ order (well, the official reason is Israeli intelligence about the alleged involvement of some UNWRA workers in the October 7th – smells like war propaganda and the trigger-happy are fast to blame the victims again).
So, wait (for final ICJ judgement) and see (the ongoing Israeli destruction of Gaza, warmongering and scapegoating of UNWRA and Iran) – or more war, whichever comes first.
I’m really uncertain about a causality. I don’t see “combat” as anything more than last resort. For once a non-Northern State has challenged the elephant in the room and we see that the Western response is to cry wolf and look East, where the next enemy would be. If we don’t look further than defending when the war breaks, we always lose to propaganda and end up shooting guns. There should be something we can do other than helping the next world war come up and send more poor people killing each other for the profit of the Hawks. I agree this discussion is well engaged for Intelligence and should be moved there, but I have a doubt about the actual topic.
Just got back from the print shop. A3 posters, flyers: done.
