Indieterminacy (aka Jonny and the Bomb): ??H to ??H
Another one? Who else?
DJs
Indieterminacy (aka Jonny and the Bomb) is happy to DJ, though this should be earlier in the evening given presenting commitments at 10am at ULB on the Sunday.
I would prefer to mix with other people - its more fun and democratic.
I enjoyed doing this with Joost during the Bytenight prior to the pandemic.
More than happy to lend equipment (if not LPs) for the evening should there be strict guards to avoid theft during the event(s) and with lockup, otherwise it will necessitate shipping out some/most of the rig mid evening.
If I can do avant garde things too thats cool (Ive got “Sound Artist - The Guardian” from sound art work from back in the day). In any case I adore mixing simultaneously with others.
I have a long and extensive experience (building up Bytenight is what Im better known for in these circles, though Ive been doing musical things in my spare time for 20 years one way or another).
I am a little rusty, I havent performed live since the pandemic.
I have most of the equipment, though I should check at one turntable and you would need to procure speakers.
Id encourage any other participants to bring equipment too for differing reasons (my cd players are dvd players for instance).
Logistics and equipment
Indieterminacy Equipment
Generic
I have lots of steel constructor tables (either six or eight), which can be used for loads or long tables (wooden beams permitting)
I have a high end extension chord - Nico has one too (its even fancier!).
Also, power bricks.
I have a narrow and long aluminium trolley, which could be convenient depending on the type of logistics.
Audio Equipment
+ A small monitor speaker for a DJ booth (not impressive but should suffice)
+ entry end audio headphones (ideally better ones would be secured)
+ Medium range audio mixer, Vestax (x3 channel (with x3 inputs to choose from each), smooth faders, killer switches, nice extensibility with external effects)
+ Guitar style portable mixer (should be ok to use to assist amplification - need to get clarification)
x1 high end turntable (fresh needle, needs some repair, the cartridge head needs gluing and there is a hum - to investigate with a neighbour for fixing)
x1 entry/medium end turntable (fresh needle)
x1 entry/medium end turntable (fresh needle but need to purchase the cartridge - would appreciate that as a (v. low) operating expense - need to check the turntable, its probably fine)
x2 DVD players - they play but nothing fancy
Lots of cables, though some may have been attacked by the new cat (enough failsafes I think)
Some audio recording options
Then an after-party to continue elsewhere
For parties outside the OFFDEM venue, as the Oxozone party must end at a reasonable time to preserve the peace and quiet of our guests.
Hum this is tricky, …
I am not sure yet exactly where the event will happen but I would prefer it not happening at the same location to preserve the living space of VSP.
Would you have a suggestion for a spot @indieterminacy
Also I would on the contrary not advertise to much the event, in order to keep it low key, we do not want to deal with a whole load of people coming from FOSDEM we are not organising this for an after party. I would like to find a way that the event be only open to people who participate in OFFDEM
From my perspective the location of OFFDEM is nice and informal and with interesting people present.
This may be advantageous for me.
Id be content to have the rig setup early in the day, so that people can casually peruse and play as part of the breakout room (volume permitting).
I trust there would be a secure lockup room (either for caching until after the weekend or to permit people to play music during the Sunday)?
On a similar note, I can do DJing during the launch party at Caldarium if you desire:
Under such circumstances I would definitely need help moving the equipment across between the sites (which I would be able to perform either immediately afterwards or during the daylight on Saturday).
Similarly, Id benefit from volunteering to help me bring my equipment from my home and back.
Regarding your decision to grow your event numbers organically I completely understand.
I was much more thinking about a smooth and short party like previous one in 2023 (with @Ada_L on stage)
Not a big one like in 2022
Oxozone Party: Finishing “early” (we need to define “early” in this context), with cool (we need to define "cool’ in this context) and diverse performances. Then to have something to offer as a follow-up to people who want it elsewhere in bxl (ZK, others, etc).
Yes this was nice, but a completely different setup.
We can think of a small party at VSP and a larger after hours in a different place if they are people keen to organize it (I am not)
The time is not really an issue I think we can go late its more the number of people, I would suggest that the people staying for the party at VSP be the ones who were also here during the event, I mean if we see that too many people start joining then we can have someone at the door.
I you some of you agree with this (I do) I could take some responsibility for organization and running there. And, of course, to make all this as clear and descriptive as possible (and consider that we’re not advertising a big event) in the run-up to this Oxozone Party.
From my perspective if you get perspective regarding how well performers align with the conference attendees that may have clues regarding how something should be improved in future years SHOULD you ever want to proactively host a larger number of attendees.
From a decade of doing DJing during Fosdem, I see it as an organic growth, whereby people feel comfortable to re-attend and encourage others to come with them.
Im sure this is the case for the main activities that OFFDEM provides, the calibre of attendees last year was certainly high.
Hey, good news : Naast Moniek is up for hosting our saturday night’s party if it’s good for us all. The disadvantage of it is its distance from VSP (half an hour by tram+walking). The advantage is that there’s room, a bar, nice people and maybe a sound system already.
Last year I was ttly exhausted on sunday because I danced all night long at the bytenight. I’m not sure yet wether or not I’ll do the same this year. I’d feel ttly fine with having a very calm saturday night as well !
I’m sorry but due to overload, we sadly decided to withdraw the proposal to host a party at Naast Moniek this year Any other option for the after-party ?
For reasons which I feel uncomfortable discussing publicly I would prefer that that other event in CityGate doesnt get promoted officially (I have mentioned the reasons bilaterally to some).
I’d like to move the conversation elsewhere in the forum (where it’s only accessible to people with an account) and thus facilitate the publication (public access) of the Oxozone Party’s page (and thus help publish the OFFDEM programm).
I fully understand that it is not an all night occasion
(though naturally, I would prefer to play for longer than 90 mins).
In any case Ill try to avoid bringing an entire fleet of material.
I suppose I should get some clarification regarding tone or genre of music.
Unless I can just do whatever I want (hehehe…).
Will I or others be playing during dinner time?
(that would impact tone for example)
I do not read anything about a sound system for the party, I tried to reach out to Kermess Panick as last year but they are unfortunately not available, do you have a solution @indieterminacy or do I need to look for last minut solution?
My fallback is to just bring my living room amplifier.
This can hold x4 speakers - x2 of which are small and silly, but the other x2 are fine.
I also have one dedicated on for the booth.
Given the location that may be fine.
If you bring something to replace the smaller ones that would help.
I suppose this is fine.
Ive decided to do the early stuff appropriate for people to talk over.
I seem to be seeking enough ambient music, I may even bring folk records it thats ok.
Could somebody secure x1 record player needle and cartridge?
I guess somebody on the Friday night would have one?
I have to reoorder something and there may be problems with p&p.
Also, I could bring a box of childrens LPs if we could be bothered to install it in the kids room in the day.
Anybody keen on helping me bring the equipment with a car or van?
I feel Im a little unsatisfied with a talk Im preparing for and would prefer to have one less task to distract me.
yes indeed I think is good if you bring your material, and I also have been offered a couple of autoamplified speakers that are at Caldarium we will bring them on saturday.
